Top Ten Tips For Back Pain Prevention

Here are top 10 how to prevent back pain tips and action steps that you can implement starting today:

  1. Guard against injury. Be aware of your surroundings. Watch out for uneven terrain, objects you can trip on, ice, wet floors, etc. Drive defensively. Many auto accidents can be prevented by avoiding disruptions in your driving concentration. That means no texting or cell phone talking.
  2. Treat all lower back injuries properly. Injuries can weaken muscles and joints. This will predispose you to recurrent strains and sprains that could have been prevented if you had taken the proper rehabilitative measure following any injuries.
  3. Keep fit. A body that is not challenged everyday to perform at its present level of fitness or more importantly attempt to exceed its present level will degenerate in either strength, flexibility or endurance. A strong fit body will be more equipped to avoid injury, recover quicker and
  4. Get and keep your body balanced. If you have structural deficits you will have strength deficits as well. A solid foundation and body balance will function with less stress and be less prone to injury … both micro- and macro-trauma. Evaluate your pedal foundation Are your feet pronated or exhibiting fallen arches? Do you have a short leg?
  5. Maintain normal joint range of motion. Joints that are too lax or too tight are more prone to sprain and encourage muscle strains. Make sure you pay attention to flexibility fitness when at the gym along with your strength and aerobic fitness.
  6. Avoid wearing shoes that are worn and broken down. You know the importance of your car tire's balance, alignment and tread wear and how they effect performance. Your treads are every bit as important. Actually more so. If your car parts wear out they are easy to replace. If your body parts wear out you may be able to replace some but they will never function as well as your original parts.
  7. Lift properly. Lift with your legs while keeping the load close to your body. Avoid bending at the waist to lift primarily with your back. Also, pivot with your feet when turning while carrying a load . Many lower back injuries occur by bending at the waist and lifting with the back in a twisting fashion.
  8. Get adequate rest. The body needs a down time to recuperate from the days work and to become stronger. Make sure you are getting 6-8 hours of sleep every night and are sleeping in a proper position that is conducive to rest.
  9. If you smoke… STOP. You know the harm smoking cause to your lungs, heart and blood vessels. Well , it also cause damage to your connective tissues (ligaments, tendons, discs). Tissue oxygen deprivation is a recognized effect of smoking and a common cause of tissue degeneration.
  10. Make sure you get optimal nutrition. Your body, every last cell, is dependent on the building, healing and maintenance properties of nutrients found in a healthy diet. Avoid the excesses of processed foods that not only lack nutrition needed but can be health robbing. Choose whole grains, seeds, nuts, vegetables, fruit and seafood. Make sure you are drinking adequate supply of water each day as well.

Prevention Is Better Than A Cure

Treat your body the same way you would treat a champion race horse or your Ferrari if you owned them. You are more valuable than either of them.

It is better to keep a back healthy than it is to rebuild a broken one.

Discovering how to prevent back pain is a lot smarter than treating back pain. The old adage applies: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

Discovering how to prevent back pain could save you money and your life. Prevention is the best health insurance you could ever own.
